Embracing Our First Lenten Season Together

This year, the spaces of Xavier Jesuit Academy are alive with new traditions as our community celebrates its first lenten season. The journey began with festive energy on Fat Tuesday, when students enjoyed a special pancake and paczki donut breakfast provided by Dr. Hollie Johnson and Fr. Nathan Wendt, S.J.

Our Ash Wednesday liturgy marked a significant moment. For many of our young men, this was their first experience receiving ashes, and their curiosity was evident as some wondered if they could "get the ash twice." These moments highlight the formative experiences taking place at XJA.

In religion class, Dr. Johnson has guided students to a deeper understanding of Lent as "a time to grow closer to God and prepare for Jesus's resurrection."

The three pillars of Lent—prayer, fasting, and almsgiving—have been embraced throughout our community. Each student received a Rice Bowl to collect change for Catholic Relief Services. Meanwhile, our cafeteria has adjusted to serve non-meat options on Fridays, honoring Catholic tradition.

Students have been encouraged to practice fasting by giving up something enjoyable this season. Many have committed to reducing their time playing video games or watching YouTube videos, which reflect thoughtful consideration about what a meaningful sacrifice looks like in their daily lives.
